Perth’s Norie Miller Walk and council buildings are to be lit up in green and yellow to support a local charity dedicated to preventing suicide.
The colour change will coincide with the annual Darkness into Light walk, which is organised by Lighthouse for Perth.
The walk begins at 4am on Saturday and will see dozens of people affected by suicide and self harm process through the city’s streets as dawn breaks.
Among those taking part for the first time is Grant McKenzie, whose younger brother Stewart took his life just months ago.
He said: “He was just a week shy of his 28th birthday. He made the 27 club.
“I had a vague clue something was going on and the week before it happened I had an inkling. The day it happened I was supporting a friend at a funeral but the night before I was sitting with him and was really worried about him.
“It’s not something I blame myself over because it was so sudden that there was nothing I could really do but I would say to anyone who was concerned about somebody that as soon as they have an inkling, talk to them, make sure you are there to support them.”
Stewart spent some time in the army but Grant insists that unlike many other soldiers, his service did not have a negative affect on his mental health.
“That was one of the proudest moments of his life,” he said. “I can remember from when we were young kids it was something he really wanted to do.
“I can remember my mum saying at the time that she’ll never forget the smile on his face when he made it into the army – it’s a good memory.”
He’s also planning his own fundraising events in said of SAMH later this month.
A spokeswoman for Perth and Kinross council confirmed they were participating by lighting up the landmarks. Yellow represents suicide awareness and green is for depression.
