Police are hunting vandals who firebombed cars near Gleneagles Hotel.

Emergency services were scrambled to a car park at the five-star resort in the early hours of Sunday.

Two vehicles – understood to be a Range Rover and an Audi – were destroyed in the blaze, while a third car was also left extensively damaged.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said this weekend's fire attack was under investigation.

"Officers are currently investigating following a report of three cars on fire in the Gleneagles area," she said. "The incident was reported around 3.20am on Sunday, and enquiries are ongoing."

Fire crews took more than an hour to bring the blaze under control. The cars were parked near the resort's Glenmor Lodges at the time.

A spokesman for the Gleneagles Hotel added: "It would be inappropriate for us to provide a comment while a police investigation is under way."

Two of the vehicles were parked just yards from one of the luxury lodge properties. The charred wreckage was cordoned off by police following the fire.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We sent one appliance to the scene. The fire was extinguished at 4.23am."

The lodges are a mix of owned and rented holiday homes on the 850-acre Gleneagles estate.

The most expensive lodge costs £2,350 a week.

Anyone with information on this weekend's incident is urged to call Police Scotland on 101 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

The attack happened just days after a third man was jailed for a dramatic jewellery heist at the world famous Perthshire hotel.

Armed robber Dean Jones was sentenced to 11 years and four months on Friday, for his role in the 2017 robbery. The 39-year-old and accomplices step-brother Liam Richardson and Richard Fleming smashed up the exclusive Mappin and Webb store on the ground floor of the hotel, and made off with more than £500,000 of designer watches.
