Politicians say self isolation doesn’t mean remote holiday as tourists descend on Highland Perthshire

Tourists have been lambasted for flocking to Highland Perthshire while the UK government is promoting social distancing.

While many responsible citizens are hunkering down, a huge influx of caravans and campervans arrived in Highland Perthshire over the weekend, sparking fears that the increased number of tourists will allow coronavirus to thrive.

Furthermore, the reduced workforce operating in the local economy is struggling under the strain of more visitors.

An area which has been blighted by irresponsible wild campers through the past few years, political forces have urged residents not to see self-isolation as a holiday.

Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart is amongst those calling on caravaners to stay put until recommendations to stay a safe distance from others are lifted.

Mr Wishart said: “There are many people heading to Highland Perthshire bringing great stress and anxiety to communities there.

“Please do not travel if you don’t need to and think about how this will impact on out fragile rural services.”

Green MSP Mark Ruskell echoed Mr Wishart’s concerns, branding the tourists “Covidiots.”

The Mid Scotland and Fife representative said: “I’m a caravanner so I get why people feel the need to escape, but if you strip supplies or spread the virus you will destroy rural communities like mine.

“If you want to self-isolate in your van then do it in your driveway. ”

Meanwhile, skiers took to the slopes in Perthshire for the last time until next winter as Glenshee Ski Centre made the call to cut their ski season short.

The centre had enjoyed a particularly busy spell in February however the company have followed in the footsteps of most other industries to shut down this month.

Sunday will be the last day of skiing in Perthshire this season, management have now confirmed.

A spokesperson said: “Although the government has not yet closed down outdoor activities, we have taken the decision to close tomorrow (Sunday) at the end of the day in line with other Scottish ski areas.

“A big thank you to all our customers for supporting us throughout the season.

“We hope to see you back at Glenshee next season.”
