CCTV catches drinkers flouting social distancing rules at Perth park

Popular Perth park Seven Acres has been shut for three weeks, but government advice has not stopped some people from congregating there.
Popular Perth park Seven Acres has been shut for three weeks, but government advice has not stopped some people from congregating there.

Three young men were caught on CCTV drinking at a locked-up Perth sports complex.

The committee at Seven Acres park in Letham released footage of the men flouting social distancing guidance near the artificial pitch.

In a post on Facebook, the group were accused of climbing on the buildings, throwing empty beer bottles around and moving outdoor furniture at the Newhouse Road park, which has been closed to the public since March 21.

Underneath the post, some of the cultprits later held their hands up for their actions.

The park committee  say they have forgiven the group and have removed the footage but are urging anybody thinking about bending the rules to learn from their mistakes.

The Seven Acres team said: “The intention was always to highlight to the young men in question the risks they were taking with the health and wellbeing of themselves and others. That message appears to have been received loud and clear.

“We are all living through difficult times which are requiring us to adjust everything we do so we fully understand the challenges faced we are not about to criminalise young people who are bored and make a mistake.

“However there are many thousands of organisations, like us, who have had to close their doors while we are under lockdown and the last thing any of us want is for someone to get injured on our premises or for the premises to be damaged while we are closed.

“We hope that we will not have another instance like this but we will continue to highlight them when they occur, if they do. We will report it to the police if needed.”
