The latest addition to the  growing reputation of Perth and Kinross for hosting cycling events is building a loyal following.

The Tayside Challenge on Saturday April 30 is expected to attract more than 200 cyclists from all over Scotland with a few more making the journey from south of the border.

The cycle sportive event is not a race but involves participants completing a set route and recording the time taken.

This is the second year that the event has been organised by Perth Kinnoull Rotary Club working in partnership with Malawi Fruits.

“We are offering a memorable and enjoyable cycling challenge in some of Scotland’s best scenery while raising funds to support local Perthshire charities and international charities including Malawi Fruits,” senior vice-president of the rotary club, Steve Blackett.

Participants have the choice of the Tayside Challenge 81 – a challenging 81mile route or the Tayside Challenge 46 – a more modest 46 mile cycling challenge for those who would not be able to complete the longer route in eight hours or less.

Both events feature electronic chip timing and at least £25 of the £30 fee will be donated to charity. Participants may choose to raise additional funds through sponsorship and sponsor forms can be downloaded from the event website.

Starting at Pitcairngreen, from 8am groups of no more than ten will depart every five minutes.

Mr Blackett, who has been heavily involved in the organisation of the sportive, added: “The purpose of the event is to raise money for people in need – Malawi Fruits is a fantastic charity helping some of the world’s poorest families educate their children.

“In the process we hope Rotarians and cyclists have a lot of fun.”

All participants are requested to register using the online registration form at www.entrycentral.com.   Click “enter Tayside Challenge” to start the registration process.   Registration is essential for participating in the event.
