A scenic Auchterarder walk popular with locals and visitors is to be closed for two months while it undergoes a £30,000 upgrade.

The next few days will be the last opportunity to walk the Common Loan path as work will start on Monday July 17.

These works are expected to last three to four weeks and will include 360m of new path surface, tree and hedge work and the installation of a self-closing gate, two benches, fencing above the burn and signage.

Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust manager Morag Watson said of the project: “We’re very excited to be undertaking these works on the eastern side of Auchterarder, especially after opening the Provost Walk phase one upgrades at the end of June.

“The Common Loan path will be closed for the duration of the works period and for about a month afterwards, to allow the new path to settle properly so that it is less likely to erode with all the visitors who will walk along it and admire the stunning views.”

The Common Loan upgrade is funded by the West Perthshire Recreational Facility.

The work comes hard on the heels of £230,000 worth of improvements to the Provost Walk at Auchterarder which was reopened recently.

It has been upgraded from a muddy and uneven track to a modern pathway suitable for walkers, cyclists and wheelchairs.

Work on the trail, which is well known for its stunning views of the Ochil hills and runs alongside the A9, began in January and the aim was to create a smooth surfaced, 2m wide path with improved drainage.

Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust, which is an independent charity, helped to fund the work.

Phase one was funded with cash from the Auchterarder Common Good Fund, Auchterarder Community Facilities Fund, the Rural Perth and Kinross Leader Programme, Sustrans, Tactran and the Auchterarder Community Trust.

A new marker has been installed at the entrance of the five-and-a-half mile trail to thank those who helped pay for the project.

Part of the new look pathway has been lined with solar lights.
