Motorway lane closed by vehicle fire

A motorway was left looking “like a film set” after a car burst into flames.

Traffic was brought to a complete standstill after the southbound carriageway of the M90 was closed by police on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 11.30am.

Waiting motorists were reported to have left their cars after the fire broke out near junction 8, where the A91 from Cupar joins the motorway.

The plumes of black smoke from the blaze were visible from more than a mile away.

Adam Morris, who works as head of media for the Scottish Conservatives, was stuck in the queues as he returned home from a weekend away with his wife and their dog.

He said: “I think we arrived on the scene about 10 minutes after it had happened.

“The road suddenly became like a car park – it wasn’t even slow moving, it was pretty obvious everything had stopped. People were out of their cars.

“We were about a mile and a half back. We didn’t have a chance to divert as there wasn’t a road where there was an opportunity to do that.”

He said he had his engine turned off for around 20 minutes before he was able to move off again.

“We drove past the car – there was a Bear Scotland van with a sign up telling people to move over into the other lane,” he said.

“The car was completely burned out. It was like something you’d see on a film set – a total shell. You couldn’t even work out what colour it was or even what kind it was.

“Anyone who was in the car would have wanted to get out of there pretty quickly.

“It was up on an embankment, so it didn’t look like it had crashed into anything.”

A fire service spokesman said the flames were extinguished using two hose reels and one lane remained closed while the silver Mazda was recovered.

Both southbound lanes were fully
reopened at around 1.20pm.

It is understood that no one was injured in the incident.
