Plan to demolish well-known restaurant to go before councillors this week

A controversial plan to demolish a family restaurant in Scone to make space for retirement homes will go before councillors this week.

Juniper Residential wants to tear down the Wheel Inn and build 60 homes on the site and the opinion of locals has been split on the issue.

Some welcome the affordable housing, while others say losing the pub will be a major blow for the village.

On Wednesday, a proposal of application notice will go before Perth and Kinross Council’s planning and development management committee.

As a Pan is only an outline of proposals, not a full planning application, no decision will be made at the meeting but it gives councillors a change to consider any major issues.

Last week, proposals were unveiled to locals at a consultation event at Scone’s Royal Douglas Memorial Institute.

Well-known restaurant to be razed to the ground to make way for retirement homes

Residents were urged to share their views, to help shape a formal planning application.

There were concerns about losing the Wheel Inn, but also about over-development of the village, with one man fearing Scone could become “another suburb of Perth”.

Scone and District Community Council, which led a high-profile fight against 700 homes in the north of the village, has said it will object.

If plans are approved, Juniper will take charge of the pub and restaurant and demolition could begin this time next year.
