VIDEO: “Dangerous” buildings close Perth city centre street

A city centre street has been declared a danger zone as Storm Ali sweeps into Perth.

Roadblocks have been put in place at either end of Mill Street, amid fears of loose tiles, crumbling rooftops and insecure masonry.

Concerns were raised about sections of Perth Theatre and the Premier Inn.

The thoroughfare, part of a new £1.5 million cultural quarter, has been closed off for the “foreseeable future”.

Traffic wardens and Tayside Contracts crews were tasked with installing barriers and sandbags at George Street and Kinnoull Street.

Part of the Premier Inn roof was visibly rattling in winds of about 40mph, as pedestrians were warned to stay clear of the street below.

The local authority confirmed the area had been closed because of “dangerous” buildings.

There were similar concerns on Princes Street, which was closed for a short time on Wednesday afternoon. Fire crews were brought in to make sure the buildings were safe.

A video sent to The Courier showed a section of Perth High School flapping in the wind. The clip is being considered by Perth and Kinross Council officers.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said: “‘The safety of pupils and teachers is paramount to Perth and Kinross Council.

“Although a small area of flashing on Perth High School’s roof was damaged in the high winds the area of playground affected was cordoned off.

“The incident had no impact on the school day and the school will reopen as normal tomorrow.”

She said: “The roof will be repaired at the earliest opportunity and checked for any further damage.”

The spokeswoman added: “Schools across Perth and Kinross will follow the normal severe weather arrangements the Council has in place and any localised issues arising from the weather will be dealt with on an ad hoc basis.”

Elsewhere, several roads across the region were blocked by falling trees.

The A823, south of Loaninghead, has been closed since 12.25pm.

The A983 Meikleour to B947, East Haugh Road, near Pitlochry, the C423 Aberbothrie at Barmundy Farm were also shut.

A footpooth on the A93 Ilsa Road at Keir Street was blocked just after 3pm

Fallen trees and debris also hit Dunkeld Road, the C458 at Machany and the U47 between the A9 and Tibbermore, but Perth and Kinross Council said the routes were passable with care.

Perth Leisure Pool closed in the afternoon, and is scheduled to re-open on Thursday morning.
