There’s no plot to oust Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, says her deputy Alex Rowley

Kezia Dugdale has the full backing of all her MSPs, her deputy leader has insisted.

Alex Rowley hit out after reports circulated claiming that a coup could take place against his boss at Holyrood.

Ms Dugdale, who is backing Owen Smith in the UK leadership contest while Mr Rowley supports Jeremy Corbyn, was jeered at a hustings in Glasgow when Mr Smith said she was doing a “brilliant job”.

Mr Corbyn called on Labour members to show respect to the Scottish Labour leader but the Sunday Herald reported a source close to the current leader accusing her of duplicity, adding: “She should be out in the wilderness.”

Former Labour adviser Paul Sinclair has claimed Ms Dugdale could face a challenge from Mr Rowley if Mr Corbyn wins.

But the Mid Scotland and Fife MSP said: “Kez has the full support of her parliamentary team and currently the majority support in the Labour Party.

“We are focused on transforming the party and have worked as a team to do that. We are rebuilding trust and we are making progress.

“I honestly think it’s a non story that people keep trying to drum up. It’s just simply not the case.”

At a hustings event for Mr Corbyn in Dundee, Neil Findlay, the Lothians MSP who is running the current UK leader’s campaign, called for unity and respect for people on both sides of the divide.

He said: “They (Corbyn supporters) are not Trots, just as those who oppose us are not Tories. We are all Labour together.”

Mr Findlay added: “Nae plots, nae resentment, nae running away with the baw (after the leadership election result).”

The winner of the contest between Mr Corbyn and Mr Smith will be announced at the Labour conference in Liverpool in September.

Ms Dugdale was elected Scottish Labour leader with 72% of the vote.
