An MSP’s attempt to get a Dundee police station taken off the closure list was rebuffed last night.
Jenny Marra, the Labour MSP, said that while other police stations shortlisted for the axe could share premises with public services, that had been ruled out for Ryehill.
Police stations in Broughty Ferry, Stanley, Bridge of Earn, Letham, Carnoustie and Anstruther are all subject to a public consultation, which could lead to their closure.
Police Scotland says no decision has been made and some of the bases may remain open.
The future of Ryehill, which is in Dundee’s west end, is due to go to consultation early next year.
Hundreds have signed a petition calling for it to remain open.
Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Ms Marra, who represents the North East region, said: “Given that it was confirmed to me that sharing is not possible in the Ryehill building, and that closure of Ryehill police station would mean west end police being based in other council wards, will the cabinet secretary please ask Police Scotland to drop the consultation on the station’s closure?”
Michael Matheson, the Justice Secretary, said the process is about “local area commanders taking a local approach that reflects local needs”.
He added: “The consultation will allow others to express their views, after which an informed decision will be taken on what the future of the station should be.”
