Hundreds of trainee teachers have quit over the last four years while Scotland suffers staffing shortages in its schools.
The drop-out rate for probationers has doubled over that period, from 51 in 2014/15 to 105 in 2017/18, according to figures from the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
Scottish Labour’s Iain Gray said the 296 walk-outs have happened since Nicola Sturgeon claimed education is her top priority.
“These damning figures expose the workforce crisis the SNP have created in our classrooms,” Mr Gray said.
A Scottish Government spokesman said: “We recognise some probationer teachers may choose to leave for a number of reasons, but 88% secured permanent or temporary contracts as teachers last year – a record number.”
