Labour’s only MP in Scotland admits embarrassing election ‘blooper’

Ian Murray
Ian Murray

Labour’s Ian Murray has been left red-faced after sending out a leaflet claiming to list his achievements – and leaving the page blank.

Ian Murray, who is the party’s sole MP north of the border, sent out thousands of the letters to members of his Edinburgh South constituency urging them to re-elect him on June 8.

Constituents were left baffled after Murray claimed his achievements were listed on the back of the letter.

But when voters turned over the page they were left with a blank sheet of paper.

If General Elections had bloopers and outtakes…….. What happens when a printing and mailing service goes wrong……….A bit of fun…….It will be corrected in the coming days.UPDATE: For all those posting, emailing me, phoning my office and sending me messages – if you read the text and hear what I said it is offered all 36,500 homes a visit since 2010 and I've done 10,000 since 2015. There is NO conspiracy here. We have done about 500 visits from those 10,000 offers. THis was supposed to be a bit of fun but obviously my opponents either have no sense of humour or like wilfully misrepreseting what I have said and written!!!! Perhaps the catalyst for all this activity is yetmore fabricated nonsense from Wings Over Scotland. I thought Bath in Somerset had more to offer to keep people busy!!!

The 40-year-old, who previously served as Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland before his resignation last year, has now posted a video apology for the printing mistake.

The official letter reads: “Together we have achieved so much and I have done my utmost to help my constituents and local groups where I can.

“That is what being an MP is all about. Just some of my achievements are on the reverse of this letter.”

However, the reverse of the page where his accomplishments are meant to be listed is a blank page.

Responding to the misprint, Mr Murray wrote on his Facebook page: “If General Elections had bloopers and outtakes – what happens when a printing and mailing service goes wrong – a bit of fun – it will be corrected in the coming days.”

Along with the comment the MP candidate added a video, apologising for the mistake.

He said in the clip: “So, we’re into a general election and today I sent out thousands of these letters to local residents and as always happens in general election campaigns mistakes and errors are made.

“It says on this letter that if you turn to the reverse of the letter, you’ll see my record of being an effective Member of Parliament.

“But if you do turn it around, it’s actually blank due to a printing error at the printers.”

Mr Murray then goes on to list his accomplishments which should have featured on the note.

Social media users were quick to ridicule Murray for the error.

Writing on Reddit, ChasePanic said: “That gave me a good chuckle.”

LowlanDair said: “Top chuckles from the comedy party.”

The_oncoming_storm commented: “That’s tremendous.”

Earlier this week the Scottish Tories were ridiculed after sending out an election leaflet which misspelled their current buzzword “strong” as “stong”.

The Conservative Party is campaigning on the slogan “strong and stable government” and Theresa May used the word “strong” 28 times in 13 minutes during a recent speech.

However, a leaflet sent to Scottish households told voters: “Only Ruth Davidson and the Scottish Conservatives can send a stong message to the SNP.”
