Drunken teacher struck off after he was filmed by pupil in boxer shorts on road

A drunk teacher filmed by a pupil in the street while wearing only his boxer shorts and trainers has been banned from the profession.

The secondary school teacher was caught on camera by a pupil one morning in public and was arrested for abusing paramedics.

Footage of the incident was posted online and watched by other pupils and staff.

He failed to disclose to the school he had been charged over his intoxicated behaviour.

The man – who has been granted anonymity – was brought before a disciplinary panel and has now been struck off the teaching register by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

The allegations against the man known as Teacher Z were that he was “under the influence of alcohol, dressed only in boxer shorts and trainers on a public road, and a video clip of you in such a state was posted on Facebook by a pupil”.

Concluding the man was “currently unfit to teach”, the GTSC added there was a “high risk” of a similar incident happening again.

If he can “demonstrate that he had taken sufficient steps in his recovery to be considered fit to teach” in the next year, the man could apply to re-register to work in the profession.

Finding he had breached the teachers’ code of conduct in six ways, the GTCS panel said: “The panel considered whether the teacher had fallen significantly short of the standards expected, meaning that he is unfit to teach.”

The incident, which happened on a Wednesday morning in June 2018, also led to his conviction in court and a fine.
