Second Covid-19 case linked to Highland school confirmed

Dornoch Academy

A second coronavirus case has been confirmed at a Highland secondary school.

A letter was sent to parents of pupils at Dornoch Academy and Dornoch and Bonar Bridge primaries earlier this week confirming there was a case in the secondary school.

It is understood nearly 70 pupils have been advised to self-isolate but the school remained open to pupils who are not affected and enhanced cleaning was under taken.

Today NHS Highland confirmed a second case has been connected to the school.

Dr Tim Allison, NHS Highland’s director of public health, said: “A second case of Covid-19 has been confirmed in a senior pupil at Dornoch Academy.

“This pupil had previously been identified as a close contact of the first case and so had not been at school this week and was already isolating at home.

“In addition to those pupils who are already self-isolating, a small number of close contacts of the second case have been identified. They are being contacted this evening and will also be advised to self-isolate.

“There are no further implications for the school at present. The health protection team at NHS Highland and Highland Council’s education service continues to monitor the situation closely.”

A Highland Council spokeswoman added: “Senior phase pupils (from S4-S6) were asked to remain at home today until the HPT had completed tracing of close contacts.

“In addition to those pupils who are already self-isolating, a small number of close contacts of the second case have been identified and will also be advised to self-isolate. All pupils required to self isolate will receive online learning and support during the period away from the school.

“The school will be open from tomorrow to all pupils who are not self-isolating.”
