Tommy Gemmell dies at 73 after long illness

Celtic legend and former Dundee FC player and manager Tommy Gemmell has died aged 73.

The former left-back was a member of the iconic Lisbon Lions and scored for Celtic in their historic 1967 European Cup final win over Inter Milan.

The Scottish international later played for Dundee and captained the Dens Park team that won the 1973 Scottish League Cup.

He was the last Dundee FC player to lift a national trophy after the 1-0 victory over Celtic at Hampden.

Celtic announced this morning that Gemmell had passed away after a long battle with illness.

A club statement read: “It is with great sadness that Celtic Football Club announces the sad passing of Lisbon Lion and Celtic Great Tommy Gemmell after a long illness.

“Our thoughts are with Mary and Tommy’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

“Funeral details will be announced in due course.”
