Travel disruption and school closures as Scotland wakes up to snow

Snow on the M77 this morning.
Snow on the M77 this morning.

Wintry weather from Sunday night into Monday morning caused travel disruption and led to a string of school closures across Scotland.

Fifty-five primaries, secondaries and nurseries in the Highland Council area have been forced to shut their doors or are experiencing transport issues due to the adverse weather.

The M8 and M77 were among the major roads to be affected by the wintry showers on Monday morning, with the north and west of the country the worst affected by the weather.

No schools in Tayside and Fife have been closed due to the conditions.

A Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice is in place across Tayside and Fife, Grampian, the Highlands, Western Isles, the south-west, Lothian, Borders, Strathclyde, Orkney and Shetland until noon.

Heavy hail and showers of the white stuff are predicted in these areas all morning, with ice expected to form on surfaces.

Another severe weather warning will be in place for Courier Country on Tuesday from 3am until 3pm with “heavy” rain and hill snow forecast, with travel disruption expected.

A Met Office statement for Monday’s warning said: “Heavy hail and snow showers are expected during Monday morning and will lead to ice and snow accumulating on many surfaces.

“The showers will be heaviest and most frequent across parts of western and northern Scotland.

“Longer journey times by road, bus and train services are likely while some vehicles could become stranded. Ice is likely to form on untreated pavements, cycle paths and roads leading to some injuries from slips and falls.

“Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”

However Glenshee Ski Centre is enjoying another busy day.

Nice day up here but the car park is filling rapidly and the kids skis have run out in Ski Hire. Hire down the road to avoid disappointments. Take care
