JJ Abrams will write and direct the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, it has been announced.
The director rejuvenated the franchise with The Force Awakens in 2015 but stood aside to allow Rian Johnson to take the helm for the next instalment, The Last Jedi.
However he will return to helm Episode IX, which will be co-written with Chris Terrio.
The film will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams himself, Bad Robot and Lucasfilm.
Ms Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, said she is “so excited he is coming back” to conclude the trilogy.
