A Trip Back in Time: Dunfermline

Post Thumbnail

Each week, we will take you on a trip back in time with a selection of photographs picked from DC Thomson’s vast archives. This week, the focus is on Dunfermline.

Our first image, from August 3 1983, shows DJs getting ready to spin the wheels of steel at the Fife town’s Night Magic disco venue. It was formerly the Kinema Ballroom.

The second picture shows Dunfermline Athletic FC being presented with a large club crest and signboard from students at Lauder Technical College. It was taken on July 2 1988.

In the third photograph, from July 7 1972, the Queen pays a visit to the town and meets various dignitaries.

Folk musicians Robin Hall, Jimmy Shand and Jimmy MacGregor get ready to entertain fans at Pittencrieff Park, known as “The Glen” in December 1965 in the fourth picture.

Dr Who star Tom Baker signs autographs at FW Woolworth in the fifth image, from December 1 1979. The actor was on a tour to promote his new book.

The sixth image shows the exterior of the old Dunfermline Opera House. It was taken on March 11 1958.

In the seventh picture, from December 1984, members of the town’s Our Lady of Lourdes Church over-60s lunch club enjoy a party.

The eighth picture shows the Duke of Edinburgh meeting a band of young drummers in the town. It was taken on June 23 1993.

The final photo was taken on June 26 1990. It shows Cairneyhill Primary pupils taking part in a Scottish Festival – which included performing some nifty Highland dancing moves –  in the Fife town.
