RAB DOUGLAS: James McPake may look to get more width into his Dundee team

Kane Hemmings scores his equaliser at Arbroath.
Kane Hemmings scores his equaliser at Arbroath.

Kane Hemmings scored a very good goal to get Dundeeā€™s equaliser against Arbroath on Saturday.

Of that there was no doubt.

Whether he will be able to score as regularly as the likes of Lawrence Shankland and Kevin Nisbet if he gets the service is he is looking for, only time will tell.

At the moment Dundee donā€™t play the same way as Dundee United or Dunfermline. They’re not a team that hits the byeline a lot.

Declan McDaid is a very good player but more often he looks to cut inside for a shot or to link-up, rather than go on the outside of his full-back.

There is a lot that goes through Graham Dorrans as well.

On Saturday, I actually thought Dundee were better when wee Paul McGowan came on. I was happy he didnā€™t start.

Heā€™s always looking to play one-twos in areas that can hurt you.

Getting more width into their play may well be something James McPake will look to change over the weeks and months ahead.

* I thought our draw against Dundee was a fair result, as was the draw at Ayr on Tuesday night.

They were both games that we could have won and could have lost.

A special thanks has to go out to the 30 Arbroath fans who made the trip to Somerset Park.

We didnā€™t have the most straightforward of trips down and, as you might expect, the conditions didnā€™t make for a classic!

On nights like that, when there are weather warnings in place, you have to think an early call-off is best all round.

Itā€™s the end of a huge week when we welcome United to Gayfield on Saturday.

Three games in that space of time isnā€™t ideal for a part-time side but Iā€™d be more worried if the Ayr match had been on Wednesday rather than Tuesday.

Weā€™ll look to make it as hard for United as we did for Dundee and Iā€™m sure Bobby Linn will be wanting to get on the scoresheet again, this time for the winner!

* You donā€™t need a former goalie like me to tell you that Fraser Forsterā€™s performance in the Betfred Cup final was immense.

He just wasnā€™t going to be beaten and I canā€™t remember seeing a better display at Hampden. Sometimes as a keeper you get the feeling itā€™s going to be your day and Iā€™m sure that was the case with Fraser.

I would imagine the opposite is true for strikers. Sometimes they must feel that whatever they do, they just arenā€™t going to score.

When Alfredo Morelos was walking up to take his penalty, he didnā€™t look like a man who expected to score.

Lenny is obviously a pal of mine and Iā€™m delighted for him.

Celtic will now feel that whatever Rangers throw at them in the league, theyā€™ll be able to soak it up and finish on top.

I certainly wouldnā€™t argue against that.

* The SFA should be applauded for slashing ticket prices for Scotlandā€™s Euro 2020 play-off against Israel.

Weā€™re favourites to win the game but a capacity Hampden will strengthen our chances even more.

Momentum is building with the national team and the SFA have helped to make sure that continues. Iā€™m sure the Tartan Army wonā€™t let their country down.
