MSPs to hear from dog attack victims as they consider toughening up the law

Jenny Marra, the Dundee-based MSP, is chairing the inquiry into dog control legislation.

Dundee parents will tell MSPs about the trauma of losing their 11-year-old daughter in a dog attack as part of a Holyrood review of animal control legislation.

Kellie Lynch was killed 30 years ago when the two pets she was walking for a family friend turned on her in Argyll.

Her parents Veronica and John are among those giving evidence to the post-legislative committee, which is looking at how effective dog control laws are.

Lisa Grady, whose 10-year-old daughter survived an attack by two rottweilers in Dundee in 2010, is also before Thursday’s committee.

Jenny Marra MSP, the committee convener, said: “Our committee will hear evidence from a couple who lost their daughter to a violent dog attack, and from parents whose children have been injured and scarred by out of control dogs.

“The serious impact of such attacks on individuals and their families demonstrates the need for effective legislation in this field.

“The committee’s job is to consider the current law and whether and how it should be strengthened.”
