Montrose manager Stewart Petrie thinks his players can gain “momentum and confidence” from their remarkable comeback against Ross County.
Petrie watched in admiration from the Links Park dugout on Wednesday night as his team, without a competitive game since March, stormed back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with the Premiership side in their opening Betfred Cup group D clash.
The Gable Endies would go on to lose the subsequent penalty shootout that decided the bonus point but that did not take any shine off a tremendous fightback.
The Montrose revival didn’t even start until the 62nd minute, with Graham Webster’s goal followed by strikes from Cammy Ballantyne and Andrew Steeves.
Petrie said: “I thought everybody was outstanding from start to finish, considering the opposition we were playing against.
“When the section was drawn up nobody would have expected to take a point off Ross County.
“So it’s good momentum and confidence for the guys, to come back from 3-0 down against a Premier team.
“It was six and a half months since our last competitive game so we can take a lot of heart from this.
“It is early days and still classed as pre-season so we are certainly not going to get carried away. Hopefully, though, we can kick on.
“We go down to Arbroath on Saturday now and they are probably the best part-time team in the country – them or Alloa – so it is going to be difficult.”
