Raith boss Barry Smith hopeful of making new signings

Raith Rovers boss Barry Smith has revealed he is hoping to make three new signings at the start of next week.

The 43-year-old only took over as manager at Stark’s Park on Tuesday but has already been working hard behind the scenes to bolster a threadbare squad.

Rovers only have seven first-team regulars still under contract and Smith is looking to have his full roster in place before the start of pre-season.

Now, he is keeping his fingers crossed that his triple swoop will be successfully completed.

Smith said: “I have been in talks with players and we are close to getting three over the line.

“Lads are obviously on holiday at the moment but things have been agreed and hopefully contracts will be signed at the start of next week.

“We also have lads already under contract and I expect them all to be there for pre-season.”

Smith has also moved quickly to put together his back-room team with the club’s first-choice goalie Kevin Cuthbert and midfielder Scott Robertson set to take up player-coach roles while Craig Easton will continue in charge of the club’s Under-20s.

Smith said: “Kevin and Scott will be player /coaches and will help me with training while Craig will be in the dug-out on match day.

“I know Scott well from Dundee when he was just a young lad but he now has loads of experience and is also going through his A licence so this is a great opportunity for him to coach.

“I have played against Kevin and also managed teams against him.

“I have spoken to him about this new role and I think we will work well together.

“He will be a first-team coach, not a goalkeeping coach.

“Tommy Wright at St Johnstone is the perfect example of someone who was a goalie and became a really successful coach.”
