Cowdenbeath 4 Edinburgh City 1: City’s title challenge ended by Allan’s superb hat-trick

Jordan Allan’s first senior hat-trick gave Cowdenbeath their first win in eight games and at the same time all but ended Edinburgh City’s title hopes.

The win on Saturday mathematically ensured the Blues would have no pyramid play-off worries this season so it was a great day for the Blue Brazil.

Cowden started the game well and led on 14 minutes when Allan fired a 12-yarder high in the net after Robbie Buchanan had set him up, and four minutes before the break he beat the visiting keeper again with a fierce 14-yard strike.

A minute after the break the former Wolves striker completed what he admitted later was his first senior treble after Fraser Mullen’s cross deceived the City defence with another smart finish, and while Craig Thomson pulled one back with a deflected 25-yarder, David Cox shot home from 16 yards after another Buchanan assist to complete a good day for the home side.

Delighted Cowden boss Gary Bollan said: “We carried on from where we left off at Peterhead where we caused the title hopefuls a lot of problems.

“We really posed City an awful lot of trouble with our fast attacks and the finishing by Jordan and David was excellent.

“Jordan has so many good qualities for a striker but sometimes he is very hard on himself when he misses a chance and we keep telling him that he has done the hard bit by being in the right place at the right time.

“He and David Cox posed City an endless amount of problems and we want to see more of that in the last four games.”

Allan, 20, was delighted with the way he took the chances, saying: “That is my first hat-trick in senior football and what a great feeling it is.

“I just felt good when the situations arose and was able to give their ‘keeper no chance, but I know I have missed good chances in recent matches so it was great to get a hat-trick.”
