Arbroath 1 Dundee 2: Dundee late show secures victory at Arbroath

A late, late show from Dundee earned victory at Arbroath in the second game of their pre-season build up.

Trailing at half-time, they struck twice inside the last ten minutes through Faissal El Bakhtaoui and Randy Wolters to turn things round.

The Dark Blues included midweek signing Jack Hendry in their starting line up along with trialists Crescendo van Berkel and Nils Rutten, both of whom were involved against St Mirren on Tuesday night.

Neil McCann’s men started brightly enough and an early opening was created for Kevin Holt, but the wing back pulled his 16 yard shot well wide.

And in the 18th minute it was the Lichties who were ahead. A clumsy Hendry challenge sent striker Steven Doris crashing in the box and referee Colin Steven rightly pointed to the penalty spot. Doris picked himself up and sent the kick into the back of the net, sending Scott Bain the wrong way in the process.

Dundee looked to hit back quickly, but despite having plenty possession they were struggling to create chances.

Trialist Rutten did have a go from long range, but saw his shot fly a couple of feet over the bar. Then Lewis Spence had a go from outside the area, only for Ricky Gomes in the Arbroath goal saved comfortably.

Just to add to the Dee woes in that first 45 minutes, skipper Darren O’Dea was booked after a tackle on Doris that lead to the pair squaring up and having to be separated by team-mates.

As he had done at the Buddies, McCann rang the changes for the second half, making new fewer than seven substitutions.

Among those coming on were summer signings Scott Allan and Randy Wolters, as well as the third trialist, Finn Glen Kamara.

Early in that second half a good move down the right saw Kamara feed El Bakhtaoui and when he crossed it took a good punch from Gomes to clear the danger.

Then Allan tried to feed Craig Wighton with a pass down the middle. Gomes spotted the danger again and quickly came from his line to gather the ball at the edge of his box.

When Wolters and home fullback David Gold clashed on the Dundee left there was another scuffle and both players were shown yellow cards.

The visitors were doing most of the pressing this half, but were still struggling to create clear cut chances.

Fifteen minutes from the end it was almost 1-1 when a quick free kick by Allan sent Mark O’Hara down the right. He centred for Wolters and when he let fly, Arbroath’s sub goalie Calum Brodie saved superbly.

Inside the last ten minutes the home side squandered a great chance to go two up when sub Kane Hester shot wide from ten yards out.

It proved a costly miss because Dundee were level in the 82nd minute. Danny Williams crossed from the right and although Wighton’s initial shot came back off the post, El Bakhtaoui was there to net with a fine effort from 12 yards.

Two minutes after that a break down the right saw the ball sent into the box where Dutchman Wolters rifled home a great shot for his first Dee goal.
