Dundee boss Paul Hartley has praised Craig Wighton for the hard work he has put in to cope with the physical demands of the Premiership.

The 19-year-old has produced some stellar performances in recent weeks which have helped him secure a sustained run in the team.

Wighton has flourished playing alongside big Canadian strike partner Marcus Haber but it has also been noticeable that the youngster has more than coped with some meaty challenges directed at him.

That is due in no small part to the work he has done in the gym with the player returning to training early in the summer to ensure he was ready for the rigours of the Premiership.

Now, Wighton, who scored a cracking goal against Inverness last weekend, has made himself a key component in Hartley’s starting XI.

The manager said: “Craig’s a boy who can look after himself.

“I think his level of performances has been good – he is looking the player we all knew he is.

“It has taken him a bit of time, he has been in and out as well as having a couple of loan periods but we have been patient with him.

“Now he is working with a partner and playing in a position he likes across the front.

“He still has to keep working hard and he has a lot to learn but we are extremely happy with him.

“Craig and Cammy Kerr have both been working with the fitness coach on the physical side of it.

“It was something they had to do to be able to handle playing in the Premiership.

“So credit to them and credit to how they are working just now.”
