Dundee’s Paul McGowan candidly confessed that Saturday’s team performance against St Mirren at Dens was the worst since he joined the Dark Blues and was an embarrassment to the club.
Paul Hartley’s side were strong favourites to successfully negotiate the William Hill Scottish Cup tie against the Buddies.
That assessment was based on the fact they fielded the same XI which had comprehensively beaten St Johnstone 3-0 the last time they played while the Paisley outfit are currently seven points adrift at the bottom of the Championship table.
However, Dundee produced a desperately-disappointing display and lost 2-0 with the final whistle being greeted with a barrage of boos by the home support.
Skipper for the day McGowan insists all the players need to take a hard, long look at themselves.
The midfielder said: “The sad thing is, they wanted it more.
“That shouldn’t be as our home form has been good and St Mirren have been struggling in the Championship.
“But they came here and they wanted it more. It is not good enough and we have embarrassed the club with that performance.
“That is probably the worst one we have put in since I have been here.
“The manager worked tirelessly all week setting us out and we go and produce that . . .
“It’s actually difficult to put the finger on what we are doing as it was the same team that wiped the floor with St Johnstone.
“You can understand the fans’ frustration as it is exactly the same team. They have paid good money to turn up and watch that.
“The players need to go home and have a good look at themselves in the mirror – me, everybody who played as that’s just not acceptable.”
