EXCLUSIVE: Dundee take two midfielders on trial – including former Scotland U-21 man

Both men will be given a fortnight to impress Steven Pressley.

New Dundee boss Steven Pressley is running the rule over two trialists.

The Dark Blues returned for pre-season training earlier this week and Pressley is casting an eye over midfielders Kyle Magennis and Tommy McDermott.

The duo have worked with new Dee technical manager David Longwell previously.

Magennis, a former Scotland under-21 international, has suffered an injury-plagued few years.

The two most recent of those have been at Kilmarnock after Derek McInnes signed him from Hibs.

His last action was against Ross County in March, when he came off after 12 minutes with a knee injury.

Magennis, who worked with Longwell at St Mirren, was released by Killie in the summer.

McDermott, 20, was signed by Burnley from Port Vale in January 2024 and was part of Longwell’s academy setup.

Last summer, after handing the player a contract extension, he said: “Tommy has had a positive impact on the group, both on and off the pitch, since joining earlier this year.

“He’s shown great flexibility in being able to play in several midfield positions and it’s been pleasing to see him show his creative side, something we knew he was capable of.

“His hard work and willingness to take advice on board have also been key to his development.

“These new terms are in recognition of that and I look forward to seeing him kick on again.”

Ins and outs

An attacking midfielder, McDermott had previously been on loan with Rochdale and Curzon Ashton.

Dundee, of course, have a strategic partnership with Burnley, making Turf Moor to Dens a well-trodden path.

Like Magennis, McDermott is now a free agent and will spend the next fortnight being assessed by Pressley.

Dundee this week confirmed the departures of Joe Shaughnessy, Antonio Portales, Scott Tiffoney, Mo Sylla and Scott Fraser, while a contract remains on the table for Josh Mulligan.

The Dark Blues snapped up Drey Wright and Paul Digby last week.
