Dundee have made a move to replace skipper Joe Shaughnessy by targeting experienced centre-back Matthew Pennington.
Shaughnessy departed Dens Park last week after turning down the offer of a new deal in favour of a switch to Australia.
The Irish defender is expected to sign for A-League side Newcastle Jets.
His exit alongside Antonio Portales has left the Dark Blues light on experience in central defence with Clark Robertson the only over-23 option in that position.
That has seen the Dark Blues target Blackpool defender Pennington, as reported by the Daily Record.
The 30-year-old has over 300 senior appearances behind him at Premier League, Championship and League One level down south.
After emerging through Everton’s youth setup and featuring for England U/19s, Pennington had loan spells at Tranmere, Coventry, Walsall, Leeds United, Ipswich Town, Hull City and Shrewsbury.
His boss at Coventry was new Dundee head coach Steven Pressley while Dens technical manager David Longwell worked with the defender at Shrewsbury.
After joining the Shrews permanently, Pennington moved to Blackpool in 2023 where he played 67 times over the past two seasons but is yet to pen a new deal.
The defender, who can also play at right-back, was included in the ‘in contract discussions’ section of the Tangerines retained list released at the start of May.
Pennington has held talks with the Dark Blues but has a number of options to choose from.
