“Sheer luck”
That’s how Drey Wright described his first Dundee goal as his very first touch for his new club flew straight into the net direct from a corner kick.
Wright’s wind-assisted opener kicked off the Steven Pressley era for the Dark Blues and set the Dee en route to a 2-0 win at Arbroath.
“As far as first touches go, I will take that,” Wright said.
“It was never meant, as you can see by the sheer luck of it and my reaction!
“It was nice to get off the mark.
“We talked about using the wind before the game, although not so much as putting it in the back of the net!
“I probably under-hit it trying to reach the back post area.
“I knew it was going to cause trouble if I hit it right and luckily it flew in.
“I’ve never done it before.
“In training the other day, when we were doing set pieces, I was asked what my preferred delivery is.
“I told them I couldn’t tell you because I am normally on the edge of the box or at the back.
“But I joked it can’t be that hard!
“I gave David (Longwell) a shout after my goal and told him it wasn’t hard.
“It is pleasing for us, as a team, to get off to a winning start.”
No ‘ego thing’
Wright was Dundee’s second signing following Steven Pressley’s arrival as head coach.
Talks over the transfer, though, began while Tony Docherty was still manager, a situation he admits was “strange” but turned out to be “seamless”.
“When I was speaking to St Johnstone at the end of the year it wasn’t an ego thing where I thought I was too good to play in the Championship,” he said.
“It was nothing like that, it just felt like the right move for me personally and there were many contributing factors to that.
“I am delighted to be at Dundee and am looking forward to the season ahead.”
Steven Pressley
So what has he made of his new boss, Pressley?
“He has been really good,” Wright revealed.
“I would have played his Coventry side years back when I was at Colchester.
“I wasn’t too sure what he was going to be like coming in, but I have been really impressed.
“Everything he has shown and what he wants us to do has been clear and very organised.
“I have been very impressed and I am looking forward to being with him for a long spell.”
