Dundee hope to sign a new striker by the end of the week.
The Dark Blues’ summer rebuild has already seen five new faces arrive this summer.
But there is still plenty of business to be done.
Emile Acquah has already come in to bolster the frontline.
But new head coach Steven Pressley wants more competition alongside skipper Simon Murray.
“We’re getting very close on another striker. We’re very close on that,” Pressley told Courier Sport.
“We hope to have some news on that within the next 48 hours.
“We feel that that’s really moving in the right direction.
“That would be positive because in all areas of the pitch we want competition.
“We only have two natural strikers in the building at this moment in time.
“I do want to play with two strikers. So I think it’s essential that we get other competition in the building.
“All three have their different attributes and all three can bring something different to the team.”
How many more?
If that one goes through, there will still be lot of work to be done by the start of September.
With five – possibly six – already signed, Pressley admits the work is likely only half completed.
He said: “We still probably need another five or six bodies in the building between now and the end of the window.
“Some of them might come in later, but we definitely need to bring more in.
“We’re certainly short in the midfield area at present.
“There isn’t a great deal of depth in there.
“We still probably need more additional attacking wide players.
“We’ve lost Charlie Reilly for a while which was a big blow to us and we need additional resource in those areas as well.
“So, there’s a number of areas that we still are a little bit light on.
“I don’t want too big a squad. That’s one thing that I don’t want.
“I want a squad where all the players feel valued and feel involved, but equally, I want a squad that’s robust enough to see us through the challenges.
“So, it’s just getting that golden number.”
In terms of other arrivals, interviews are ongoing for the assistant head coach role and will conclude on Friday.
The Dens boss hopes to have both his assistant and the goalkeeping coach position filled by the first competitive match of the season against Airdrieonians next Saturday.
Meanwhile, former Dundee trialist Kyle Magennis has signed a new one-year contract at Kilmarnock.
