Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has failed in his bid to be elected to the SPFL board.

The Tannadice chief had resigned from the same executive body last May in protest at the fine and points deduction handed out to the Tangerines for listing ineligible players for a game against Inverness Caley Thistle.

Thompson then put his name forward to be one of the two Ladbrokes Championship representatives for the 2016/17 season.

.

However, he was beaten in the ballot by Raith Rovers chief executive Eric Drysdale and Leeann Dempster of Hibs.

Thompson said: “It’s fine. I can concentrate 100%, as I have been, on re-establishing my club and challenging for promotion this year.

“We got a good result last night (6-1 over Cowdenbeath) but there’s a long way to go.

“It’s a strong board.

“There are some good people on the board and that’s important.

“Being relegated, you don’t realise how tough it is until you are actually relegated.

“It’s been a hard two months.”

The Premiership teams will represented by Celtic’s Peter Lawwell, Ann Budge of Hearts and Ian Maxwell of Partick Thistle.

Speaking for Leagues 1 and 2 will be Ken Ferguson of Brechin City, who was the sole nominee for that post.

The board will also include SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster, chairman Ralph Topping and independent non-executive director Karyn McCluskey.

The results of the voting by the 42 member clubs was announced at the SPFL’s annual meeting today.
