New signings from Aberdeen Willo Flood and Cammy Smith have both been included in the Dundee United squad for tonight’s League Cup trip to Arbroath.
Chances are, though, only striker Smith will make the starting line-up at Gayfield.
Flood is rated no more than 50-50 because of the thigh knock he suffered while playing for the Dons in the Europa League last week.
Rather than risk him, it’s likely his latest Tangerines debut will be held back until the clash with Cowdenbeath at Tannadice on Tuesday night.
Gaffer Ray McKinnon is looking forward to seeing Smith in action and if fans have to wait a few more days before seeing former favourite Flood back in a United shirt, he’s sure it will be worth it.
“They’re both very good players. Cammy can play in any of the front four positions and he’ll do a good job for us,” he said.
“So will Willo. He’s taken a big wage cut to come back here, and that shows how hungry he is.
“He could’ve sat out his final year at Aberdeen and probably played 25 games but he wants to be playing every week.
“I’ve known him since he was doing his coaching badges with the SFA and I know as well as doing a job on the park he’s a great trainer. He does things properly and that rubs off on others.”
As well as Smith, goalkeeper Cammy Bell, defender Lewis Toshney, midfielder Stewart Murdoch and striker Tope Obadeyi are set for competitive debuts tonight.
And the manager is closing on another signing.
“I’m happy with the players I’ve brought in.
“I’ve said all along it might take a wee bit of time but it’s been about making sure we get the right people and I think that’s what we’re doing.
“There is another player I am speaking to and that one could be done over the weekend.”
