EXCLUSIVE: Tam Courts emerges as shock contender for Hungary switch following Dundee United exit as Rijeka talks stall

Hungarian adventure? Courts
Hungarian adventure? Courts

Tam Courts could be in line for a stunning switch to Hungarian top-flight side Budapest Honved.

Courts, 40, departed Dundee United ‘by mutual consent’ on Tuesday afternoon, bringing his one-year stint in the Tannadice hot-seat to an end.

The former Kelty Hearts manager had been granted permission to speak to Croatian side Rijeka, with discussions carrying on until Monday.

However, Courier Sport understands those talks have failed to result in an agreement.

Departed: Courts.

Nevertheless, Courts is now weighing up several live options, both in England and abroad, and is expected to secure a quick-fire return to the dug-out.

One of those opportunities is an eye-catching vacancy with Budapest Honved, who are searching for a successor to Serbian boss Nebojsa Vignjevics.

Honved — 14-time champions of Hungary, and the club who nurtured the talents of Ferenc Puskas — finished in 10th place last season.

Their sporting director is Scotsman Chris Docherty, who previously spent a year working as head of tactical performance at Dundee United from June 2021.

During that time, he cultivated a positive relationship with Courts which has remained strong.

Docherty has worked in Croatia and Hungary since departing Tannadice.

And it is understood Courts is among the contenders for the vacancy.

Croatian coach Goran Tomic and former Wales boss Chris Coleman have also been linked with the post.
