Craig Levein has revealed that he has undergone a triple heart bypass.

The former Dundee United, St Johnstone and St Johnstone manager checked himself into A&E in Kirkcaldy after becoming concerned about his health, having been increasingly short of breath when attempting to exercise.

Dunfermline-born Levein, 60, previously suffered a heart attack in 2018 while Hearts manager, requiring stents to be fitted.

And he was given the choice between more stents or the major procedure.

Having opted for the latter, Levein is adamant he made the right decision.

“I was struggling to walk and breathe at times, if I was going up any hills,” Levein told BBC Scotland podcast Sacked in the Morning.

“It had to be done. They offered me more stents, something like five, and I was like, “not for me”.

“The other option was the triple bypass and it’s been a good decision. I’m feeling really good.”

Levein: I saw the devil

However, he acknowledges that the immediate aftermath of the operation was a surreal affair, with the myriad pills leaving a delirious Levein convinced he could see THE DEVIL.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he added. “I was on about 14 different pills. I had delirium. I had no idea what was going on.

“I woke up, and I’m sitting on my bed, and there’s a nativity play going on, and there’s kids running about.

“And I swear, I think it’s real.

“Then I look across to the other side of the ward, and there’s a cubicle, and the curtain’s open, and the devil’s in there!”
