Former Dundee United captain Ross Docherty has joined Championship promotion hopefuls Ross County.

Docherty, 32, has penned a two-year deal and will link up with former Tannadice teammate Declan Gallagher in the Highlands as the Staggies waste no time in building a strong squad for their title tilt.

The classy midfielder was released by the Tangerines at the end of last season following a successful, but ultimately frustrating two years in Tayside.

Docherty was plagued by muscular problems, playing in just 20 of the club’s 36 Championship fixtures in 2023/24, then 22 of their 38 Premiership games last term.

Nevertheless, he was an game-changing presence when available, and the signing of the former Ayr United and Partick Thistle ace represents a considerable coup for County.

‘A fantastic addition’

Staggies boss Don Cowie told the club’s official website: “Ross is a fantastic addition to our club.

“He brings a wealth of experience in Scottish football and leadership skills which have been a trademark throughout his career. We are delighted that Ross has chosen to join us.”
