Jim Goodwin insists he has yet to decide on who will succeed Ross Docherty as Dundee United’s club captain.
Tannadice academy graduate Ross Graham led the team out against Brechin City on Saturday – before powering home the opening goal of a 3-0 win – and is likely to be among the prime candidates.
However, the likes of Vicko Sevelj, Craig Sibbald and Will Ferry and Ryan Strain are all influential figures at the club.
Even new signing Bert Esselink has extolled his own leadership qualities.
However, Goodwin will keep his powder dry until closer to the competitive action kicking off.
“I’ve not made any decision on that yet,” he told Courier Sport.
“It’s an honour to lead this club and I will have those discussions in the coming weeks. I’ll speak to those players who are involved in that conversation.
“But we’ve got some great leaders in the group, and we’ll spend a bit of time before we make that final decision.”
Getting closer
Meanwhile, Goodwin reckons the Tangerines are “close” to further reinforcements.
United have already done brisk business this close season, with Iurie Iovu, Zac Sapsford, Panutche Camara, Yevhenii Kucherenko and Bert Esselink all bolstering the Tannadice ranks.
However, work continues apace behind the scenes as they gear up for the Conference League opener against UNA Strassen.
“We’re talking to a number of players, and we feel that there are one or two of those quite close,” Goodwin continued.
“But I think we’ve done good business up to now and we can be really pleased with the recruitment that we’ve done so early.
“The window’s open for a long period of time, but we’re working away in the background. Ross Goodwin (head of recruitment) is doing a fantastic job. He’s settled into the role brilliantly, along with the support of Luigi (Capuano, CEO).
“It’s just about getting those contracts agreed. We’ve identified good and it just takes a little bit of time to get those deals over the line.”
