Dundee United were knocked out of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup by Arbroath.
The match finished 0-0 and went straight to penalties.
In the shoot-out Arbroath keeper Derek Gaston saved from Liam Smith to seal a 4-3 win.
Both teams made plenty of changes to their normal starting line-up, as expected.
Gaston was the hero in normal time as well as the penalty shoot-out by making a string of fine saves, including three in quick succession after the break.
United sent on Lawrence Shankland and Paul McMullan but neither could come up with a goal. McMullan headed wide near the end.
For Arbroath there was an injury-time effort from Greig Spence which just missed the United goal.
