Brechin 3 Airdrie 2: Dods praises spirit as setbacks shrugged off

Dougie Hill.

Brechin City boss Darren Dods praised the team spirit of his side after a 3-2 win over Airdrie at Glebe Park propelled them to the top of League One.

In a pulsating encounter, City grabbed the lead twice only to be pegged back, they had what appeared to be a good goal disallowed, and lost their goalkeeper through injury in the first-half.

However, they kept pushing forward and were rewarded when Dougie Hill headed a winner 12 minutes from time.

“The team spirit at the club is really good and the momentum we built up at the end of last season to escape the drop has continued into the new season,” the City manager said.

“We might have gone on to lose that match at this stage last season but the spirit and character that the players showed today to win the match was magnificent after the setbacks of losing the lead twice, having a goal disallowed and losing our goalkeeper.

Ally Love grabbed the opener for City after nine minutes.

The Diamonds equalised eight minutes before the break when Andy Ryan slotted the ball past sub keeper Paddy O’Neil, who had replaced the injured Graeme Smith just minutes earlier.

City got their noses in front again in the 68th minute when Andy Jackson fired home after he had a goal disallowed just three minutes earlier.

The visitors hit back again with Scott Stewart equalising shortly afterwards.

City pushed forward again and they got their reward when Hill rose to head a Love cross past Rohan Ferguson in the Diamonds goal.
