East Fife 1 East Stirling 1: New deal for Naysmith adds to Fifers’ celebrations

Party time for East Fife.
Party time for East Fife.

East Fife collected the League Two trophy at Bayview to round off a fantastic day for the club.

In the build up to kick-off, it was announced gaffer Gary Naysmith had penned a new two-year deal, with the boss setting his sights on leading the Methil men to the Championship.

A plan is in place to do just that, said the player/boss.

“There’s a real buzz about this club at the moment and everybody is pulling in the same direction,” he said.

“One thing is for sure, it wasn’t like that when I took over.

“In theory we’re only back in the same league again but the club is in a much better place.

“All we need to do now is make sure the club doesn’t stand still. I need to keep progressing us.

“I’ve signed a two-year contract because I believe it’s a two-year job.

“We need to stay in the division next season, and if we can challenge for the play-offs then great.

“The season after is the one where we have to have a real shot at it.

“I believe there’s work to be done here.”

Almost getting in the way of the celebrations was a 90-minute football match which won’t live long in the memory.

East Stirlingshire, who will face Edinburgh City in a play-off to stay in the league, made six changes from the week before.

Rather than be at Bayview, Shire boss Craig Tully chose to take in City’s second-leg play-off match with Cove Rangers.

He missed a spirited showing by his young side against the champions.

Keeper Richard Barnard in particular was in inspired form with a series of top-class saves.

Nathan Austin was the first to be denied by the keeper when he raced in one-on-one.

On-loan Hibs striker Jamie Insall was the next to find the keeper equal to his effort when Barnard got down well to stop his strike from six yards.

It was a game of few chances, but the deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion a few minutes into the second half. The Methil men conceded a free-kick on the edge of their box and were punished by Michael McMullen who fired his effort past Liam Kelly.

But their lead lasted barely a few minutes.

East Fife went straight on the offensive and were level when Barnard could only push an Insall strike back out into the six-yard box, and Kevin Smith was on hand to fire home the rebound.

The game looked as if it had opened up but, despite further efforts from Smith and Declan O’Kane, there was no winner.
