Arbroath 5 Stirling Albion 3: Hat-trick hero dedicates goals to friend’s family

Bobby Linn is a doubt for the game.
Bobby Linn is a doubt for the game.

Arbroath hat-trick hero Bobby Linn dedicated his performance to the memory of the mother of a close friend who passed away suddenly on the eve of the game.

The Lichties midfielder grabbed his trio of strikes in a 14-minute spell midway through the second half of a pulsating game which produced eight goals but could have ended with even more.

Linn said: “I got a call from a childhood friend of mine, Darren Gormley, the night before the game to say his mum had passed away.

“So I’d like to dedicate every single goal and the victory to him and his family and to his mum.

“I was up with him until 3am this morning and it was hard being here today. My heart breaks for him. It’s hard to see a friend go through that. It was so emotional when the third goal went in.”

The Lichties had a let off after 12 minutes when a long-range effort from Eddie Ferns deceived keeper Robbie Mutch and found the net, but an Albion player was judged to have influenced the outcome from an offside position.

Arbroath took the lead on the half-hour, Josh Skelly clipping the ball over the advancing Chris Smith.

The Binos levelled when Jassem Sukar deflected Darren Smith’s shot beyond Mutch.

Albion took the lead after the restart, Blair Henderson shooting low beyond Mutch.

It was all square four minutes later when Linn guided home a Skelly cross at the far post.

Linn then fired the Lichties into the lead from the penalty spot after Skelly was tripped in the box.

Ferns scuffed the ball home from close range to make it 3-3.

But within two minutes Linn completed his hat-trick with a powerful finish and Omar Kader made it five in the 78th minute to secure the points for the Lichties.
