Montrose 2 Annan Athletic 2: Gable Endies fight back after loss of early goals

Montrose manager Paul Hegarty.
Montrose manager Paul Hegarty.

Montrose boss Paul Hegarty hailed a “wonderful fightback” by his side as they stormed back to draw with Annan.

However, the result leaves the Gable Endies looking for their first league win of the season.

Hegarty said: “We gave the two goals away very cheaply and gave ourselves a mountain to climb. If you had offered me a point at half-time I would have grabbed it with both hands.

“My players gave everything, but they have got to start better. We made one or two changes, but the credit goes to the players.”

Annan took the lead on two minutes. The home defence failed to track the run of Darren Ramsay as he burst from midfield to score with a low drive.

Worse was to follow for Montrose as Annan scored again on seven minutes when Max Wright flicked home a Ramsay corner on the near post.

Montrose tried to settle and Graham Webster and Ross Campbell both had efforts on goal.

The hosts pressed forward at the start of the second half and got their reward on 54 minutes.

An Iain Campbell free-kick came off the head of trialist Calum MacDonald – the former Peterhead defender has now signed for the rest of the season – to reduce the leeway.

Gary Fraser then somehow shot over from a MacDonald knockdown, but the flag was up for offside.

Montrose levelled on 63 minutes when Fraser headed home a Ross Campbell cross.

Paul Watson volleyed wide and Terry Masson then sent a hook shot over the bar.
