Forfar Athletic 3 Elgin City 2: Bollan to work on defence despite going four clear

Four league wins out of four see Forfar Athletic sitting well clear at the top of League Two – but manager Gary Bollan knows his side has to improve one aspect of their game and quick.

The Loons got the better of their Highland visitors in a five-goal Station Park thriller to leave Bollan’s side four points clear of Arbroath.

He said: “We said at half-time we can’t keep having games where we have to score three times to win, week in week out.

“It’s not acceptable and it is up to us as a staff to work on things defensively.

“We are doing that. We have good players at the back, it is just a case of sometimes not switching on.

“However, we fought our way back in and that just shows you the character we have. Last season we probably wouldn’t have won that game.”

After an insipid start, the game finally came to life in the 22nd minute. Chris McLeish forced his way through a couple of weak challenges in the Forfar box to fire a shot past Grant Adam from 12 yards.

The home side levelled in the 38th minute when Tom O’Brien thumped home a brilliant 25-yard strike into the bottom corner.

Three minutes before the interval, Elgin restored their lead. Craig Gunn easily slotted home a lovely centre after an attacking run by Shane Sutherland.

Four minutes into the second half it was all square again as Forfar levelled in similar fashion to Elgin’s opener. Josh Peters forced his way through a couple of half-hearted tackles and as the ball broke to him, he slammed it home from just inside the box.

The Loons took the lead in the 64th minute with a brilliant goal started and finished by O’Brien. He picked the ball up in his own half and powered forward to get on the end of Jim Lister’s centre, skipping past a defender and slamming home.
