Clyde 5 Cowdenbeath 3: Fox urges Blue Brazil to step up to the plate

Cowdenbeath boss Liam Fox called for his side to “step up to the plate” after a poor defensive showing saw them concede five goals.

Despite creating numerous opportunities and looking threatening in the opposition box, the Blue Brazil suffered a third defeat in four games due to their own lapses in concentration.

Fox, whose side sit third-bottom ahead of Montrose and Edinburgh City, said: “We’ve come away from home and created chances but it seems like when other teams attack us, they’re going to score goals.

“We need people to step up to the plate and first of all stop crosses and defend crosses as well as defend set pieces.

“We just look vulnerable at the moment at the back, and it’s costing us.

“It’s disappointing, from my point of view, as we’ve basically gifted them goals and it’s up to me to sort that.”

Fox would love to strengthen the defensive department, and added: “I think it’s defensively that there’s a problem and it’s up to me to sort that on the training pitch.

“The money is really tight at the club so it’s difficult and we’ll have to go away and see if we can bring anyone in.

“It’s about getting the right player. We want someone that’s going to come and make us better but on the evidence of today that won’t be difficult. But we still should be performing better defensively than we did today.”

The visitors were behind after only 13 minute when Chris Smith turned in a Dylan Easton cross.

They were back on level terms after half an hour when Dean Brett fired home from the spot after a foul on Gary Glen.

Two minutes later Cowdenbeath were behind again as Sean Higgins scored a tap-in.

Balance was restored when Brian Ross scored from long range after 42 minutes.

Just before half time the home side went ahead once more when the unfortunate Craig Sives put through his own net following a scramble in the box.

Goals from Higgins and Smith in the 59th and 73rd minute extended the Bully Wee’s lead before Cowdenbeath were handed a late consolation through Clyde sub David Gormley’s own goal.

Clyde gaffer Barry Ferguson was happy with the three points, but also had concerns about his team’s defensive showing.

He said: “We were great going forward but defensively all over the place. I’m delighted to get the three points and I thought we deserved that, but we gifted away three goals and we can’t keep doing that.”
