Montrose boss Paul Hegarty believes steady improvement led to landmark victory

Montrose boss Paul Hegarty admits that Saturday’s stunning win over Forfar was the culmination of some steady improvement over the last few weeks from his players.

Gary Bollan’s Loons side were firm favourites going into the derby, sitting top of League 2 with a magnificent seven out of seven winning record.

However, Hegarty’s men upset the odds at Station Park to secure a 3-1 win thanks to a brace from Gary Fraser and another goal from Chris Templeman.

Now, the Links Park boss is looking for his players to build on that result to propel them up the table.

Hegarty said: “Forfar have been flying since the start of the season so we were obviously delighted to get the win.

“I read Gary Bollan’s after-match comments and I agreed with him that we looked hungrier on the day.

“Our players have now set a high benchmark but to be fair to them, there has been steady improvement over the last two to three weeks.

“I think that’s due to some of our senior players returning to form and that has given everyone encouragement.”

Hegarty added: “We have taken seven points from our last three games which is a marked improvement on what went before.

“It is all down to the players. They make or break you as a manager and either get you the plaudits or the sack.

“But we have a great bunch of lads at the club who work extremely hard and they deserve enormous credit for the Forfar win.

“However, it is still just three points and we have to continue the way we have been going to get us up that table.”
