Warning from last season for Cowdenbeath

Billy Brown.
Billy Brown.

Cowdenbeath manager Billy Brown takes charge of the Blue Brazil for the first time when Highland League Champions Buckie Thistle pitch up at Central Park.

And he has already reminded his squad about their close shave against East Kilbride.

Brown has moved up from his number two position after Gary Locke returned to Hearts to take on an ambassador’s role, and is warning his players that they will face a tough afternoon against their Highland League opponents.

Brown said: “I am really looking forward to getting our season off and running but I am wary of this opening game.

“We kept hold of our senior status by defeating East Kilbride on penalties at the end of last season. They could have beaten us so we cannot think we are above losing to a side from out with the SPFL.

“East Kilbride were as good as any League Two side and they had to fight very hard to squeeze past Buckie to get to the play-off final so I am treating them as if both clubs are on a par.”

The early start to the season is also a concern to Brown, who added: “We will not have full squad for this game as there are signed players still on holiday and trialists that we have not seen enough of to sign.

“We had a good outing against Queen of the South a couple of weeks ago and a couple of closed door friendlies since then. We are not the finished article but this will be another step forward.”
