Comment: St Johnstone set high benchmark once again

Tommy Wright has brought back Danny Swanson.

It is difficult to do justice to the true magnitude of what St Johnstone have achieved in recent years.

The bare facts of Scottish Cup glory and securing European qualification in five out of the last six seasons do not tell the whole story.

The Perth side have long been regarded as a well-run club but it would be no exaggeration to state they are now a shining example and benchmark for every side outwith Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen.

Once again on Saturday, they secured another milestone qualifying for Europe by cementing fourth place ahead of sides such as Hearts with much bigger budgets.

Manager Tommy Wright has done another fantastic job and every Saints fan will be hoping that clubs elsewhere continue to seemingly be oblivious to his incredible record of success at McDiarmid Park – something which is one of the most baffling footballing mysteries of our time.

Wright will lose one of his best players, Danny Swanson, to Hibs this summer but it was great to see the St Johnstone fans giving Saturday’s match winner a standing ovation when he left the field late on.

However, Wright himself pointed out that Saints have coped in the past when they have lost star performers such as Stevie May and Michael O’Halloran.

The manager will no doubt recruit wisely once again to hopefully continue what is nothing short of a golden age for everyone connected with the Perth club.
