Former St Johnstone midfielder, Matt Smith, has signed for Newport County.
The 25-year-old fell out of Simo Valakari’s plans in January and was made available for transfer in that window.
Having being substituted in the first half of Saints’ New Year defeat to Dundee at McDiarmid Park, he never appeared for the Perth side again even though a mid-season move wasn’t secured.
And it came as no surprise that he was one of 16 players who weren’t offered new deals last month.
Smith has pledged to use the “challenging moments” in his career to get back on track in the EFL’s League Two.
“I’ve been fortunate to experience different cultures, different teams, and different systems, which have definitely helped shape me as a player,” said the Welsh international.
“I’ve learnt from both the positive and challenging moments and used them to grow stronger.”
Smith is the second Saints player to move from Perth to Newport in recent years.
He won’t be teaming up with Luke Jephcott, however, as the striker has been released.
