Ferguson turns pro this week

Ewen Ferguson will enter the pro ranks in the Challenge Tour event in France this week.

Ewen Ferguson is “excited” to be making his professional debut in the Challenge Tour this week after leaving an outstanding career in amateur golf.

The 20-year-old from Bearsden, a member of Great Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team at Royal Lytham and St Annes a year ago, has signed with Scottish management company Bounce and will make his first hit in the pros at the Cordon Golf Open in France.

Ferguson has already played twice on the Challenge Tour this season as part of the new arrangements allowing elite amateurs to play the European Tour’s satellite circuit. The young Scot is also the first professional out of the new arrangement between Scottish Golf and Bounce aimed to tailoring a pathway for the country’s best amateurs into the professional game.

A hand injury has meant intermittent appearances for Ferguson throughmuch of this summer and meant he missed out on selection for Scotland’s trio for the World Amateur Team Championship. But now fully recovered, the 2015 Scottish Amateur golfer of the year and former Boys Amateur champion intends to make an immediate splash in the pro ranks.

“It’s been my long-term goal to become a professional golfer and it’s really exciting to be making this move after just turning 20,” he said.

“I’ve signed with a great management company in Bounce Sports, have starts guaranteed and sponsors on board, so it’s a really exciting time for me, my family and everyone connected to Bearsden Golf Club, where I grew up playing.

“I would like to thank Scottish Golf, sportscotland and sponsors such as Aberdeen Asset Management for all their support since I started in the national set-up when I was 13.”

Ferguson has already played and made the cut in two Challenge Tour starts this season, in Turkey and Italy. But he’s under no illusions about what he has to do.

“I learned so much from my two amateur appearances, learning how good the professionals are and what I need to do to compete,” he added.
