Good British GT account opener for Lamborghini star Mitchell at Oulton

Sandy Mitchell made a strong start to his 2020 British GT campaign.

Angus Lamborghini racer Sandy Mitchell opened his British GT Championship account in style at the Oulton Park curtain-raiser for the coronavirus-curtailed 2020 season.

A class win and overall podium for the Letham 20-year-old in his Black Bull Lamborghini Huracan Evo GT3 has catapulted Mitchell and new teammate – British Touring Car veteran Rob Collard – into an early Silver Cup championship lead.

“It was an excellent weekend in terms of performance and points haul,” said Lamborghini Squadra Corse junior squad member Mitchell.

“To leave the opening weekend with our first class win, first overall podium, be leading the Silver championship and lie third in the overall championship, just three points adrift of the leaders, sets us up nicely for the season.”

The duo finished fourth in the opening race of the double-header in the Barwell Motorsport Huracan and were firmly in contention for the top step in the second one-hour race before a three-car incident curtailed their battle with the team’s sister car for outright honours.

It saw the race finish under the safety car, depriving the Cheshire spectators of a fight to the flag.

“There’s no denying it was frustrating, because it would have been terrific to see the two Barwell cars really battling for the overall win,” said British Racing Driver’s Club SuperStar Mitchell.

“We’ve shown we have a fast, reliable car, a super team and strong driver pairing, plus we know we can build on the success of the opening weekend.”

The next outing is a Donington Park double header of a one-hour and a two-hour race on August 15/16.
